Corinthians beat Rosario Central 1-0 at Neo Química Arena to reach the Libertadores quarter-finals, and Hugo Souza said the team’s progress was an answer to the racism row from the first leg.
“The feeling was anger, frustration and hatred. The note was ridiculous.” he told ESPN.
“With all respect to Rosario’s players, the club’s stance was ridiculous. Players on the pitch apologised to me.”
The match officials activated the anti-racism protocol at 21 minutes of the second half, while Allan’s sending off came at 35, contradicting Rosario Central’s claim it followed the red card. Ángel Di María urged fans to stop and the stadium announcer issued anti-racism warnings.
After the first leg, Corinthians called on Conmebol to investigate. Rosario said it had yet to find video from the relevant sector, but began an internal inquiry and said any identified offenders would be sanctioned. Before the return, Corinthians reiterated their anti-racism stance on social media.
Breno Bidon scored the winner, setting up a quarter-final against Estudiantes, with the second leg at home and the first at the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi. Dates are to be confirmed, with the ties expected in September. Corinthians visit Coritiba at 19:30 on Sunday at Couto Pereira in the 24th round of the Brasileiro.
