If he features on Sunday against São Bernardo at Primeiro de Maio, Hugo Souza will reach 100 games for Corinthians in the 8th round of the Campeonato Paulista.
According to Globo.com, in 593 days he has cemented the role, lifting the Campeonato Paulista, Copa do Brasil and Supercopa Rei, and joining the club’s top three penalty savers, level with Gylmar dos Santos Neves.
He arrived from Portugal after relegation, unsure of his future despite a Flamengo contract, and credits Corinthians with turning the lowest point of his career into the best, changing his life and reviving big ambitions.
The following year he saved Raphael Veiga’s penalty at Itaquera to clinch the Paulistão, then months later denied Gabigol and helped Timão eliminate Cruzeiro in the Copa do Brasil semi-final.
His form earned Brazil call-ups, and while guarding Corinthians’ goal this season he hopes to play at a World Cup.
On Sunday at 20:30, Brasília time, he will receive a club plaque for his services and will be one of their main hopes for a win in the ABC Paulista. Corinthians must beat São Bernardo to guarantee a Paulistão quarter-final place without relying on other results.
