The two Championship clubs have been linked with Lyon's Remy Descamps

Hull City and West Bromwich Albion have reportedly placed offers for Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper, Remy Descamps, at the beginning of the current winter transfer window.

That is according to French outlet, Le Progres, with a report surfacing on Tuesday evening regarding the aforementioned transfer developments.

The Tigers and the Baggies have endured extremely contrasting seasons in the Championship thus far, with Sergej Jakirovic's side currently 11 places and 10 points better off than the West Midlands outfit, who, unarguably, have far greater matters to currently resolve than the need for reinforcements across their squad.

It was confirmed on Tuesday morning that Albion had parted company with former Hull, Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder, Ryan Mason after 26 league matches in charge, with a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Monday night proving to be the final nail in the coffin when it came to the 34-year-old's first full-time managerial role.

The current window allows both second tier sides to conduct business until the set deadline of 7PM on February 2nd, with the current week representing a free schedule up until their FA Cup third round clashes with divisional rivals, Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City, respectively.

However, it must be said that both the East Yorkshire and Black Country outfits have been somewhat hamstrung when it comes to their previous transfer activity, and such a predicament automatically impacts the Tigers once more this winter.

Indeed, Jakirovic, who worked under an embargo at his previous club, Kayserispor, saw Hull placed under a transfer fee restriction by the English Football League (EFL) after the club were found guilty of delayed payments to other sides, with the eventual punishment being reduced to the two transfer windows in the 2025/26 campaign, rather than an extension into next season.

The goalkeeping situation at both the MKM Stadium and The Hawthorns has come into the spotlight for varying reasons across the season, with it now apparent that the services of Descamps are wanted by the two Championship sides.

The 29-year-old has spent the entirety of his career in France to-date, initially progressing through the academy ranks of the current UEFA Champions League holders, Paris Saint-Germain.

After signing his first professional contract with the capital club just short of 10 years ago, Descamps failed to make the senior grade at the Parc des Princes, later moving on to Belgian Pro League side, Royal Charleroi Sporting, before returning to Ligue 1 with FC Nantes in the summer of 2021.

However, in a three-year stint at the Stade de la Beaujoire, the shot-stopper would only make 17 senior appearances for the club, although a record of eight clean sheets in said timeframe was a particularly impressive feat.

In August 2024, Descamps then moved to the Groupama Stadium on a free transfer, ahead of what proved to be an extremely tumultuous campaign for Lyon.

Indeed, the seven-time French champions went on to finish in a UEFA Europa League place, but were initially consigned to an automatic relegation to Ligue 2 amid well-documented financial uncertainty, before such a decision was reversed.

Throughout his spell with OL thus far, Descamps has deputised for Lucas Perri and currently, Dominik Greif, making just 10 appearances - seven of which have come this term.

Yet, whilst it is expected that he will feature in the upcoming Coupe de France clash against LOSC Lille on Sunday, Paulo Fonseca could be set to lose his 'number two', with Le Progres claiming that Hull and West Brom have put offers on the table for the goalkeeper, who is ESTIMATED to be earning a salary which equates to approximately £27,300 per week.

As previously mentioned, Hull's current sanctions mean they can only sign free transfers or loans in which no extra payment is required. However, Descamps is not the only shot-stopper they have been linked with.

It emerged last week that City were interested in Middlesbrough goalkeeper, Seny Dieng. However, the Tigers are currently at a standstill on this front as Jakirovic must offload players before adding reinforcements.

Meanwhile, despite currently being under the temporary stewardship of former midfielder, James Morrison, Albion have had difficulties in their goalkeepers union ever since Alex Palmer exited for Ipswich Town 12 months ago.

Joe Wildsmith and Josh Griffiths have been rotated under Tony Mowbray and the aforementioned Mason, with the latter returning to the Baggies lineup on Monday in what proved to be his ex-head coach's final game in charge.

As such, it is no real surprise that links with Descamps have emerged, but it remains to be seen which of the two clubs could secure his signature amid a multitude of intriguing factors.
