Hwang Hee-chan has left Wolves to join Schalke on a season-long loan, finalised on deadline day.

The forward returns to the Bundesliga, having played for RB Leipzig before arriving at Wolves in 2021, initially on loan. According to ExpressAndStar.com, technical director Matt Jackson said the move emerged late before the German window closed.

Jackson said the approach came very late, that Hwang is returning to an environment he knows and needs games. He praised the South Korean’s professionalism and felt he deserves the opportunity.

He added that Hwang had expressed understandable frustration about minutes, had trained excellently in pre-season despite knowing he would not be involved, and accepted the situation with good grace. Jackson said the forward has made a major impact at Wolves in previous years and hoped he can recreate those moments at Schalke.

Schalke will pay his salary in full during the loan. Hwang remains contracted to Wolves to the end of the 2027/28 season, with an option for a further 12 months.
