Vivianne Miedema fired Manchester City into a 21st-minute lead before Kelly Gago’s goal got Everton back into the game. Khadija Shaw netted the winner for Manchester City early in the second half.
When speaking to the media after the match, Everton boss Sørensen said that he took plenty of positives from his side’s performance.
“I thought they did everything we spoke about and did it with success for a lot of times,” Sørensen said. “I think the keeper had a good game and maybe that final decision in the final third [could’ve been better], but we still created some good chances. Of course, it’s hard for 90 minutes to keep them away from [our goal] with the quality they have in that frontline.
“I’m frustrated but positive about a lot of stuff that I saw in the game. I don’t see many teams playing through City like we did today, as frequently as we did it, and I definitely felt we deserved more.”
It was another game where Sørensen adjusted systems and positions of his players. As a result, the flexibility of attackers Toni Payne and Gago was demonstrated and Sørensen gave some insight into the tactics.
He said “We changed our setup throughout the game, in terms of what the opponent exposes. It depends on which players jump in pressure and then you’re following that. That meant Toni [Payne] ended up on the winger because [Leila] Ouahabi was jumping in that pressure. We also knew there was a good situation against whoever they play in the centre-backs that she can get in that half-space. I thought we should exploit it a bit more in the first half.
“We’re still building up fitness and making sure that they can all do 90 [minutes], so we don’t need to make any changes. We’re still a bit forced into doing that. Again, a lot of positives and good goal from Kelly. We created good chances and I definitely felt we deserved more.”
One player who really stood out for Everton was summer signing Ornella Vignola who created a couple of good chances to score. Sørensen was full of praise for the player following her performance.
He said “Ornella has a lot of confidence, it’s more just getting her into the right situations and so on. I normally don’t single a player out, but I thought Ornella was outstanding. The work-rate she had off the ball and then to be able to have the energy to create many opportunities for us was superb.”
Everton are next in action when they travel to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.
