According to Hull Live, the Teesside outfit are preparing an offer for the full-back.

Giles spent last season on loan with the Tigers, before signing on a permanent basis from Luton Town at the end of the year.

But Hull’s financial position means that sales are needed to help balance the books, which could lead to a return to Middlesbrough.

The left-back spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at the Riverside, where he proved an important part of Michael Carrick’s first team squad.

Palmer believes that a loan move is not something Hull will want to agree to this summer, meaning a permanent transfer is the most likely outcome of this Giles pursuit.

He has cited the club’s financial concerns as the main reason why the Tigers will prefer a permanent deal, with no agreement yet reached between the two clubs.

Middlesbrough and Michael Carrick are preparing to bid for Ryan Giles,” Palmer told Football League World.

“Ryan Giles was on loan at Middlesbrough under Michael Carrick during the 2022/23 season, and he’s keen to return there.

“He went to Luton Town, and things didn’t work out for him.

“He went on loan to Hull, and there was an agreement in place that Hull had to buy him for £4 million, so they’ve had to do that.

“But Hull’s current financial situation means that they’re open to selling Giles, the owner has come and said that to balance the books they have to let four or five, six players go.

“The player is keen to reunite with Michael Carrick at the Riverside, but Middlesbrough are not wanting to pay £4 million for the player.

“I doubt whether Hull would be keen to allow a loan move to happen, especially to somebody they consider a rival, they’ll be in similar positions.

“I think they would prefer a permanent deal, so whether they can agree on a deal that would be acceptable to Hull in terms of the money, or whether it’s again another deal done on the basis that taking him on loan and agreeing to sign him permanently down the line.

“But I wouldn’t have thought that Hull would be looking to just let him go out on loan.

“But having said that they’ve got to raise money, so we’ll see what offers come in for Giles, Middlesbrough are very, very keen to take the player.”

Ryan Giles’ importance to Hull

Giles joined Hull last January on loan from Luton, having been unable to earn regular playing time in Rob Edwards’ side.

He made 17 appearances in the Championship under Liam Rosenior, helping the team come seventh in the table (all stats from Fbref).

Of his 17 appearances, 11 came as a start, as he contributed just one assist.

Giles bagged 11 assists from 45 appearances in the second division during his time at the Riverside, playing a pivotal role in helping the team secure a play-off place.

Ryan Giles returning to MIddlesbrough would be a good move for all parties

Giles’ best form in his career came at Middlesbrough, working under Carrick, so returning there would be a positive next step in his career.

Boro have promotion ambitions, and adding the 24-year-old to their ranks would help achieve that goal.

A move to the Riverside might also help him settle somewhere in his career, as he has moved around a lot in the last couple of seasons, which hasn’t been good for his development.

Boro struggled to replace him last summer, and he was missed during the campaign as they finished eighth in the table, so bringing him back could be an ideal move for all parties.
