‘I Know What It Takes’ – Former Leeds United Star Keen To Help Middlesbrough Up | OneFootball

Former Leeds United star Sam Byram has stressed that he knows what it takes to win the Championship and feels that he will add quality and experience to the Middlesbrough squad.

The 32-year-old defender came through Leeds’ academy system and went on to play for West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Norwich City before he returned to Elland Road in 2023.

Byram managed to win promotion under Daniel Farke at Norwich City during the 2020/21 season and the German brought him back to Leeds to help the Whites in their promotion bid.

He played 1,409 minutes in Leeds’ promotion-winning campaign in the 2024/25 season and  former Whites star Neil Redfearn, who coached Byram during his early days, stated that he is brilliant to work with.

Last season Byram played a bit part role in Leeds’ Premier League campaign, but Farke praised the 32-year-old for always delivering on the training ground despite being a fringe player.

Byram left Elland Road this summer following the expiry of his contract with Leeds and he has just joined Championship outfit Middlesbrough.

The ex-Leeds defender pointed out that he has vast experience of playing in the Championship and added that he knows what it takes to win promotion.

Middlesbrough will be aiming to get back in the Premier League this season and Byram stated that he will be able to add a bit of quality to the group.

“I have been around this league for a number of years and had a couple of promotions in that time, so I know what it takes”, Byram told Middlesbrough’s official site.

“It is an incredibly tough league and a long season, but it is a great squad and a great group.

“If I can add a bit of experience and a bit of quality, that is what I’m here to do.”

Byram featured 224 times for Leeds in his career with 13 goals and 15 assists to his name.

Middlesbrough have secured three points out of their first two games and now the 32-year-old will be eyeing his third Championship promotion with Boro.
