Andrey Santos has admitted it’s hard to say what his preferred position in midfield is after starring in the win against Burnley.

Chelsea recorded a 2-0 win at Turf Moor and in the process made it three wins and three clean sheets in a row in the Premier League.

The Blues are now outright second having jumped above Manchester City after they lost to Newcastle on Saturday night.

Andrey Santos on preferred position in midfield

Santos was handed his third Premier League start of the season, with Moises Caicedo named on the bench after playing twice for Ecuador over the international break.

The Brazil international had big shoes to fill, but Santos was more than up to the task as he put in a superb performance, his best in a Chelsea shirt.

Santos was outstanding, especially off the ball as he made a number of key blocks and interceptions, and Chelsea were able to give Caicedo the afternoon off.

Pedro Neto was full of praise for Santos at full time, and the 21-year-old will be hoping for further opportunities in big games against Barcelona and Arsenal this week.

Santos played as a number six against Burnley, but has also shown he can play as a number eight, and he was asked about his preferred position after the game.

“It’s hard to say one position [that he prefers to play] because I like to play like a number eight or like a number six,” he said as quoted by Football London.

“I think it is efficient for the coach if he thinks that the better I play like a number eight, I will do my best.

“But if he thinks that I can play like a number six, like today, I will do my best.”

Chelsea stacked in midfield

The thought of winning a game without Caicedo was almost unheard of last season, and the Ecuadorian started all 38 league games.

However, Chelsea need to manage his workload this season, and he was also the bench for the win against Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea’s task is made easier by having capable replacements like Santos and Romeo Lavia when he’s fit and available, and both will be key players throughout the season.
