The red card given to Wesley Fofana in the Burnley game at the weekend could prove pivotal to Chelsea’s top 5 hopes. The Blues were cruising at that point, but ended up drawing 1-1.
The defender is highly rated, and has largely escaped blame for his mistake. But Matt Law on the London is Blue podcast thinks he’s being given a bit of an easy ride.
“If his name was Axel Disasi, I think there would be a lot more conversation around his performances,” the Daily Telegraph journalist said.
“There’s been some real brain farts where he’s not picked up people. He switches off and does some very odd things sometimes. And the red card is kind of a different example of that…. the level he’s shown, he can be an absolute Rolls-Royce, but because of that I do think that maybe he isn’t judged quite as harshly as other defenders.”

There is definitely a good comparison with Disasi here. Fofana is so good at his very best, and so elegant on the ball and physically dominant at times, that his mistakes are easier to forgive. Disasi is much less pretty, and so it feels like his errors stand out more.
Just imagine how badly Disasi would have been slaughtered for that stupid second yellow that his countryman got last weekend.
Kendry Paez is back in the River Plate squad, earlier than expected.
