Cesar Peixoto arrives in English football as an unknown. According to ExpressAndStar.com, Wolves have not made a more leftfield choice since Walter Zenga.

Zenga was an Italy international with 300-plus Inter Milan appearances. Peixoto’s Portugal career amounted to a cameo in a 2008 friendly defeat to Brazil.

They share a rapid rate of job changes. This will be Peixoto’s ninth post in just over seven years, including two spells at two clubs.

His best work has come at Gil Vicente. Last season they finished sixth in the Portuguese First Division under his watch.

His 16 months in charge in Barcelos is his longest stint. Before his appointment in February last year, he had never lasted beyond 30 matches in one job.

He came through Vitor Guimaraes’ academy, started in the fourth tier with Cacadores Taipas, then Belenenses. A Champions League knee injury with Porto against Marseille checked his progress.

Loans to Guimaraes and Espanyol preceded a switch to left-back. He joined Braga in 2007, then Benfica in 2009, winning a league and cup double in 2010.

He finished as a player at Gil Vicente, retiring in 2014. Nearly five years later he took Varzim in the second tier and kept them up.

Short spells at Coimbra, Chaves and Moreirense totalled 33 matches, then two at Pacos Ferreira ended with relegation in 2023. After a year out he returned to Moreirense in summer 2024 for seven months, before joining Gil Vicente, where his rise resumed, which Wolves will hope continues.
