Ethan Robson has joined National League North leaders South Shields on loan as Ian Watson reunites with the former Sunderland and Blackpool midfielder. The move comes as the Mariners push for promotion.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Academy of Light graduate made 14 senior appearances for Sunderland and scored in a Checkatrade Trophy win at Carlisle United in October 2018. He later had loans at Dundee and Grimsby Town, left for Blackpool in summer 2020, then moved to MK Dons just over two years later.

That MK Dons switch brought him under Watson, who was assistant to Mike Williamson at Stadium:MK. The pair later took him to Carlisle United, and Watson has now secured him on loan again after completing the deal last week.

Robson debuted in Saturday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Marine, where on-loan Sunderland wing-back Oli Bainbridge scored an overhead kick deep in stoppage time. The point moved Shields six points clear at the top.

Second placed AFC Fylde visit the 1st Cloud Arena on Tuesday night, and Robson could be handed a first start after quietly impressing as a second-half substitute.

Watson said Robson is an incredible footballer who loves getting on the ball, has a lovely left foot, and already understands their style from previous spells. He noted injuries have halted him at times, but thinks Robson will help on and off the pitch. He added the signing bolsters an area hit by injuries to Davey Carson and Luke Woolston, and he feels the midfielder is a perfect fit.
