Flamengo will face Independiente del Valle in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals after the Ecuadorians beat Deportes Tolima 3-1 on Tuesday 25. According to Coluna Do Fla, the last-eight bracket is set.

Del Valle have won 16 in a row and lead the Ecuadorian league with six rounds left. The title is decided by a final hexagonal despite their 23-point cushion over Aucas and a 22-1-3 record.

Their most recent slip was a 3-2 home defeat to Libertad on 22 May in the national league.

In the Libertadores group stage they topped Group H, which featured Rosario Central of Di Maria, finishing on 13 points with four wins, one draw and one loss.

Notable names include Junior Sornoza, formerly of Fluminense and Corinthians, Juan Cazares, formerly of Fluminense and Atlético-MG, who is out with a torn right ACL, and midfielder Jhegson Méndez, formerly of São Paulo.

This year’s standouts are striker Charli González, 33, with 14 goals, six in the Libertadores, and left winger Emerson Pata, 22, with eight.

The first leg will be in Quito at Estadio Banco Guayaquil, 2,850 metres above sea level, between eight and 10 September, with the return at the Maracanã between 15 and 17 September. The report added the ties promise to be very tough, given Del Valle’s form and Quito’s altitude, and that keeping Gonzalo Plata now could be important, given his Del Valle roots and knowledge of the conditions.
