Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi became the most talked-about figure in Italian football on Saturday evening for all the wrong reasons, not for what he did against Atalanta, but for what he was denied.
The Italy midfielder earned a consistent set of ratings from the media despite his late cameo, with the controversy over his penalty claim dominating every assessment.
Gazzetta dello Sport summed up the frustration succinctly, via L’Interista.
Frattesi “was on the verge of delivering the three points with one of his trademark runs.”
Before, indeed, the foul went unpunished.
Corriere dello Sport were equally pointed, offering a brief but loaded verdict: “He had earned a penalty.”
Both outlets awarded him a 6, a fair reflection of a substitute who made an immediate impact and was unfortunate not to be the match-winner.
The incident itself has since been acknowledged as a clear error by AIA officials, with the penalty appeal now set to be reviewed on Open VAR.
For Frattesi, the rating matters little compared to the two points dropped.
The Italian has been looking to recover his form after a difficult season and this blow will, however, sting.
