Inter Milan have begun negotiations to sign Udinese midfielder Roberto Pereyra, according to Calciomercato.
Inter are already planning to reinforce their squad for next season, but their precarious economic situation means they cannot spend too much on fresh recruits.
The Nerazzurri are instead targeting players who could become free agents at the end of the season to snap them up on a free transfer, and Pereyra is the latest name on their radar.
Simone Inzaghi’s side could do with some midfield reinforcements, as Inter could sell some of their biggest stars next summer to generate revenue.
Denzel Dumfries, Lautaro Martinez, and midfield duo Nicolo Barella and Marcelo Brozovic could all exit the San Siro next summer with their finances hanging by a thread.
Preparing for that possibility, the club have begun taking steps to fill up any spaces that could be left in the squad, and Pereyra could prove value for money if the deal is completed.
Pereyra’s contract with Udinese ends in the summer, and there is currently no talk of a new deal on the horizon.
The Argentine is free to sign pre-contract agreements with other clubs this month, and Inter have opened talks with the player’s representatives over a possible deal.
Pereyra joined Udinese from Watford in 2020 and has made 184 appearances for the Serie A side, contributing 20 goals and 31 assists.
The 32-year-old could add some much-needed creativity to Inzaghi’s side in the middle of the park, having recorded six assists and two goals in 18 league games for Le Zebrette this season.
Inter could be without Roberto Gagliardini next season, with the Italian’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old has barely featured for the Nerazzurri this season, making just two starts of his eight league appearances. He could leave the club to free up space on Inter’s wage bill as they target reinforcements.
Inter also intend to recall Giovanni Fabbian from his loan spell at Reggina, with the midfielder currently dazzling in the lower leagues, having recorded seven goals and an assist for the Serie B side.
