Inter Milan are set to compete with Real Madrid for highly rated Hajduk Split defender Branimir Mlacic, according to reports from Spain.

The young centre-back has developed at remarkable speed and recently earned a call-up to Croatia’s Under-21 side, prompting major European clubs to take notice.

Spanish outlet Defensa Central, via FCInter1908, claims Mlacic fits perfectly into the long-term recruitment model favoured in Madrid: investing early in high-upside young talent.

Club president Florentino Pérez has embraced this philosophy for years.

Indeed, with Raphaël Varane’s arrival at the age of 18, and subsequent rise to a starring role, often cited as the blueprint.

Juni Calafat, the influential scouting chief behind Real Madrid’s recent transfer successes, is reportedly keen to secure Mlacic’s signature.

His current market value sits below €1 million, making him an appealing low-risk, high-potential investment.

However, there is one major obstacle.

Mlacic only renewed his contract with Hajduk Split on November 4, extending his deal until 2029.

That long-term agreement strengthens the Croatian club’s negotiating position.

Indeed, it could complicate any approach from Real Madrid or Inter.

Inter, meanwhile, have already been tracking Mlacic as part of their defensive planning for the future.

With their back line ageing and injuries mounting, the Nerazzurri are eager to add young, developmental talent.

Therefore, Mlacic is seen as a player who could join the Under-23 squad.

Or, alternatively, remain in Croatia until he is ready for the first team.

The coming months are likely to see intensified competition, with both Inter and Real Madrid positioning themselves for one of Europe’s most promising teenage defenders.
