Simone Inzaghi said, "Cancelo continues to train regularly with the team, but his future and whether he stays or not is a matter for the board of directors." He told Sport hours before Al-Hilal’s league opener, a stance that has encouraged Barcelona to resume talks over a return.
The Italian left the Portuguese full-back out of the squad to face Al-Faisaly, a clear sign he is not in the early-season plans.
Barcelona have taken the comments as a green light to push ahead with negotiations. Hansi Flick has prioritised the role, valuing Cancelo’s ability to cover both flanks.
Cancelo has signalled he wants back at Camp Nou, posting a new Barça-linked image on Instagram last Friday, his second hint since last season ended.
The clubs had moved close to a fee of 10 million euros, then Al-Hilal raised their demands to 15 million before allowing the 32-year-old to leave. That shift has cooled talks, with Barcelona unwilling to overpay while Al-Hilal await a replacement.
The onus now sits with sporting director Deco to find a structure that trims the price and delivers the return Flick wants.
