Ipswich end Coventry’s home run to boost promotion bid

Coventry City’s formidable home record finally came to an end as Ipswich Town produced an impressive 2-0 victory at the CBS Arena to strengthen their push for automatic promotion.

The visitors were the sharper side for long spells and made their pressure count late on, with Jack Clarke’s deflected effort breaking the deadlock before substitute Wes Burns sealed the win in the closing stages.

Ipswich controlled much of the first half and should arguably have gone in front before the break. Jack Taylor was denied by an outstanding save from Carl Rushworth after bursting through the middle, while Clarke and Azon both went close as the Blues enjoyed plenty of the ball without reward.

Coventry improved after the restart and briefly threatened to wrestle control, with Haji Wright forcing Christian Walton into a smart save from distance. However, clear chances were hard to come by for the hosts, who looked unusually flat in the final third.

The breakthrough arrived with just under 20 minutes remaining. Clarke cut inside and fired towards goal, with the ball taking a significant deflection off former Ipswich defender Luke Woolfenden and looping beyond Rushworth to silence the home crowd.

Ipswich sensed their moment and wrapped up the points 11 minutes later. Clarke was again involved, helping work the ball wide for Burns, who showed composure to slide a low finish into the bottom corner in just his second appearance since returning from injury.

From there, Kieran McKenna’s side saw the game out with little fuss to complete a league double over Coventry this month and hand the Sky Blues their first home defeat of the season.

The result lifts Ipswich firmly into the promotion picture, while Coventry remain top despite a rare off day on home turf.
