After an inconsistent start to the season, it has been an excellent few weeks for Millwall, who are now third in the Championship table after picking up their third consecutive victory with a 2-0 win over Stoke City at The Den on Tuesday night.

However, Luongo did not feature against the Potters after he was forced off in the early stages of Saturday's victory at Queens Park Rangers with a knee injury, and Lions manager Alex Neil has now confirmed that the 33-year-old will miss the rest of the season.

After being released by Ipswich this summer following a hugely successful two-and-a-half year spell at Portman Road, Luongo joined Millwall on a one-year contract in June following an impressive trial period.

Luongo made 11 appearances for the Lions in the early weeks of the season, with nine of those coming from the start, as he established himself as an important part of Neil's team, but the promotion hopefuls will now be without his services for the remainder of the campaign.

After arriving on a free transfer in January 2023 following his release by Middlesbrough, Luongo helped Ipswich achieve back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, and he scored six goals in 86 appearances during his time at Portman Road.

Luongo's game time was limited last season as the Tractor Boys were relegated from the top flight, but he remained an incredibly popular figure in Suffolk right until his departure, with manager Kieran McKenna describing him as "the best free signing in football history" in May after it was announced the club would not be renewing his contract.

The 33-year-old has not quite built up the same legacy at Millwall just yet, but he has certainly made a positive early impression, so there would have been plenty of disappointment among the Lions faithful when Neil confirmed on Tuesday night that he is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"Massimo, unfortunately, he’s done his ACL, so his season is going to be over, which obviously we’re gutted about for him and for us, because he’s been excellent," Neil told Southwark News.

Ipswich were among those to react to Luongo's injury blow, with their official X account sending the club's best wishes to the former Australia international in response to a post from the Lions announcing the news.

"Sending our best wishes to Mass during his recovery," Ipswich wrote on X, accompanying the post with a blue heart emoji.

Luongo's midfield partnership with Sam Morsy was crucial in Ipswich's back-to-back promotions, and after joining Millwall on a free transfer this summer following his Portman Road exit, he has proven that he still possesses plenty of quality at Championship level.

As shown by the Tractor Boys' social media post, Luongo remains a well-respected figure at the club, and he has arguably been missed this season during what has been an underwhelming start to the campaign for McKenna's men, while he has made a strong start to life with the Lions, so both sets of supporters will be equally disappointed to hear news of his injury.

An ACL injury can often be one of the most serious injuries a player can sustain, and at the age of 33, it remains to be seen what impact it will have on Luongo's career, but both Ipswich and Millwall fans will be hoping to see him back stronger than ever next season.
