Brazil’s federal government has barred betting companies from operating from five October via a provisional measure signed by President Lula. However, Flamengo fans are not banned from wearing the club’s Betano-branded shirt, and doing so is not a crime.
After the measure was signed on Friday 25, false posts spread online claiming that wearing a football shirt with a betting logo could be a crime. Agência RTI Esporte reports that the presidential text contains no provision criminalising fans for simply wearing a club shirt.
Many Brazilian Série A clubs depend on betting firms as main sponsors, and their brands still appear on pitchside hoardings, broadcasts and other sporting spaces.
Supporters therefore have no reason for concern while the dispute between authorities and betting firms remains unresolved, whether walking around town or attending matches.
Those logos are likely to remain visible in streets and stadiums for a long time, since replica shirts remain official club products bought by consumers.
Flamengo’s master sponsorship with Betano, signed in August 2025 and running until December 2028, is the biggest deal in Brazilian football, and the betting company would pay around R$ 268.5 million per season to feature on the shirt.
