Fiorentina midfielder Hans Nicolussi Caviglia has spoken openly about the influence of Johan Cruyff on his footballing philosophy, calling the Dutch legend a “source of inspiration” as he reflects on his own journey in Italy.
In comments to the press ahead of his Italy debut (via Tuttomercatoweb) he explained how watching Cruyff’s playing style shaped his approach to the game.
He said: “Cruyff has always been my reference point. His vision, intelligence and capacity to interpret space are things I try to bring into my own performance.”
He also acknowledged the strong defensive legacy in Italy: “Here in Italy there has always been a very strong focus on the ‘play forte’ — the physical, tactical side. But combining that with creativity, that’s where I try to build my path.”
Nicolussi Caviglia, originally from the Juventus youth system but currently playing on loan from Venezia at Fiorentina to seek more playing time, has impressed with his technique and composure in midfield.
The 25-year-old has been blending the cerebral with the combative, aiming to honor the footballing intelligence of Cruyff while adapting to the demands of Serie A.
By openly citing a great from outside the Italian tradition, Nicolussi Caviglia signals his ambition – to forge a style that merges flair and discipline, and to stand out in Italy by marrying imagination with resilience.
As a result of his abilities, he has now become a key part of Stefano Pioli’s Fiorentina and would hope to make a similar impact for Italy.
