Enzo Maresca revealed Romeo Lavia is in pain, but didn’t have an update on the injury he suffered on Wednesday evening against Qarabag.

Lavia lasted just five minutes of the Champions League clash in Azerbaijan before being replaced by Moises Caicedo.

Maresca confirmed after the game he thought Lavia had suffered a quad injury, and this is just the latest setback in a long line of injuries since the Belgian joined the club in 2023.

Injuries have limited Lavia to just 30 appearances for Chelsea, and he’s yet to complete 90 minutes for the club, whilst he’s missed a total of 568 days through injury.

Lavia has managed seven appearances in all competitions this season, and looked visibly upset as he left the pitch in Baku.

It appears the Belgium international is once again set for a spell on the sidelines and Maresca provided a further update ahead of Saturday’s game with Wolves.

“Yeah, we don’t have an update at the moment, so we need to wait still some hours to do all the checks that he needs, but for sure at the moment he’s injured,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“It’s painful, so we need to do all the checks and then we’ll see.”

Whilst Chelsea do have other options in midfield, they are now down to just three recognised midfielders in Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos.

Injured stars having their minutes managed

Maresca had confirmed he was managing Lavia in a similar way to Reece James when he was coming back from injury, and the Chelsea skipper is now fit to play three games per week.

Wesley Fofana is in a similar boat and currently is only being played once a week, having had a number of injury issues during his time at the club.

Hopefully the long term approach will pay off, but right now with Lavia it’s proving to be a very frustrating situation, and one Chelsea desperately need to find the right solution for.
