Jair Ventura has reflected on his brief 2018 stint at Corinthians, saying Pedrinho’s disallowed goal in the Copa do Brasil final was decisive and, in his view, influenced his departure. He replaced Osmar Loss in September after a poor run that included a Libertadores last-16 exit to Colo-Colo.

"We beat Flamengo in a semi-final and reached the final, where everything happened with that wrongly disallowed goal by Pedrinho," he said. "The silver medal was not valued and we were sacked," he told Estadão.

Corinthians reached the decider after overcoming Vitória, Chapecoense and, in the semi-final, Flamengo, by which time Ventura was in charge.

Cruzeiro won the first leg 1-0. In the return, a 28th-minute error by Léo Santos allowed Robinho to put the visitors ahead.

On 10 minutes of the second half, Jadson pulled one back from the spot, leaving Corinthians needing one more to force penalties.

Soon after, substitute Pedrinho scored from distance, but VAR advised a review for a foul by Jadson on Dedé and the goal was chalked off.

Chasing the result, the hosts created little and Arrascaeta struck on the break to seal Cruzeiro’s triumph.

Ventura stayed until the end of the Brasileiro, Corinthians finishing 13th to qualify for the following season’s Copa Sudamericana.

Overall, his 19 games brought four wins, six draws and nine defeats, a 32% return, with 12 scored and 19 conceded. He now coaches Vitória.
