James Morrison has moved to quash the notion that West Brom will be a narrow side without wingers, as he looks to add natural width on the eve of the Championship season.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Albion are pursuing a traditional wide player after a summer refresh, with Morrison’s previous narrow set-up shaped by personnel rather than preference.

Albion open at Norwich on Saturday. Asked if he wants a more traditional winger, Morrison said yes.

He said modern opponents are well coached and the team must be flexible. He reiterated he wants wingers and enjoys seeing wide players go one-v-one and lift the crowd, while stressing any deal will depend on how things unfold.

Albion lost former captain Jed Wallace to injury in the spring and he has since departed, while Mikey Johnston is still recovering from a broken ankle sustained in Morrison’s first game in February.

Isaac Price has featured on the left but tends to drift inside, and youngster Harry Whitwell has filled in on the right during pre-season amid limited options.

Morrison remains keen to add at least one orthodox wide player before the deadline. Asked if a narrow shape is his preference, he replied: “No, that's not the case. It's just a system that we've had to fall onto with personnel and we're doing and coaching it the best way we can.”
