Tottenham Hotspur face an untimely setback after Jan Paul van Hecke withdrew from Netherlands duty with a foot injury, handing Roberto De Zerbi a selection puzzle before the 10 October trip to Manchester United.

De Telegraaf reports the defender will not travel for Thursday night’s game against Greece, having attempted to train on Wednesday morning before cutting the session short due to ongoing discomfort.

The 26-year-old picked up the problem during the Oranje’s 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday and has since left the squad.

Since arriving from Brighton in the summer, Van Hecke has started every league match and played every minute, remaining central to De Zerbi’s set-up despite scrutiny of his individual form.

He has made six appearances in all competitions, scoring in the 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, and missed only the 3-1 Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool when he was rested.

The Netherlands sit second in Group two on four points after a 1-1 draw with Germany and a 2-1 victory over Serbia.

They face Greece on Thursday, then host Serbia on four October. Spurs will assess Van Hecke on his return.
