Jan Vertonghen, the former Belgian centre-back and ex-Benfica player, has returned to Portugal and visited Estádio da Luz, sharing images from his trip and stay in Lisbon on social media.

According to Glorioso 1904, the trip is about education rather than competition. He is part of UEFA’s 2025-2027 Executive Master for International Players (MIP), a programme run across several countries that has come through Portugal at this stage.

He retired at the end of last season. He has also praised the signing of Dodi Lukebaki.

Other students include Bruno Alves, Simon Kjær, Ivan Rakitic, the former referee Cuneyt Çakir and others, in a cohort that blends career experience with academic study.

His posts prompted nostalgic reactions from supporters. For Benfica in 2020/21 and 2021/22 he made 88 appearances, scored one goal and provided two assists, and he won a Campeonato Nacional under German coach Roger Schmidt.
