Jannik Vestergaard has undergone hernia surgery and may not feature again until April for Leicester City.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, he had tried to avoid an operation but the decision was taken for surgery. He has missed City’s last three games and could sit out the next eight, with a longest recovery pushing beyond the March international break and a possible return at home to Preston on April 3, when seven matches would remain.
The setback might also keep the 33-year-old out of Denmark’s World Cup play-offs at the end of March. City can turn to Ben Nelson, Caleb Okoli and Jamaal Lascelles if their other centre-backs stay fit.
The timeframe is roughly four to six weeks, and he had attempted to manage the problem before the operation, with those details emerging after the 4-3 defeat to Southampton.
Jeremy Monga was a surprise absentee on Tuesday, but it is thought to be only a minor issue and he could be back on Saturday.
If he does return, City would have seven players missing for the FA Cup tie with the Saints, with Vestergaard joined by Hamza Choudhury, Aaron Ramsey, Jordan James and Harry Souttar on the injury list, while Bobby De Cordova-Reid is suspended and Joe Aribo is ineligible.
