Former Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martínez has revealed he thought Alphonso Davies’ abilities were a complete disaster when the defender first arrived at the club.
The left-back arrived at the Allianz Arena from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019 and has gone on to win three Bundesliga titles and the Champions League while at the club.
But Davies didn’t initially impress his teammates as Martínez shared with journalist Gerard Romero.
“With Davies we thought at the beginning: what a disaster!
“Technically he wasn’t up to the mark at all, and he made a lot of tactical mistakes.
“Sure, he was only 18, but we really had the feeling that he couldn’t keep up at this level.
“Honestly, thousands of third division players could also keep up in the first division purely in terms of football.
“It’s about getting faster – also in your head. Only a few manage to adapt. Davies did it.”
Davies is currently missing from first-team action as he recovers from showing an inflammation in a heart muscle.
