Javier Aguirre appointed Valencia CF head coach on deal to season’s end | OneFootball

Valencia CF have appointed Javier Aguirre until season’s end, tasking the 67-year-old with securing LaLiga survival ahead of the expected Nou Mestalla move. He succeeds Carlos Corberán and interim Óscar Sánchez.

The club said in a statement he has a nine-month deal, extendable to 2027/28 if he qualifies the team at least for the UEFA Europa League.

Valencia have not played in Europe since March 2020, when Atalanta eliminated Albert Celades’ side.

After seven LaLiga rounds they have four points from 21, sit 19th, and will enter the break in the relegation zone. Málaga CF have three, safety is Levante UD on five.

Aguirre will arrive in Valencia midweek with a slim staff, including fitness coach and assistant Pol Lorente and assistant coach Toni Amor. He will take charge later in the week at the Ciutat Esportiva de Paterna.

His LaLiga career spans Osasuna 2002-2006, Atlético Madrid, Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés and Mallorca 2021-2024. Only at Leganés did he fail to prevent relegation in 2019/20.

He is the choice of new sporting director Braulio Vázquez. The backdrop is a crisis since September 2019, when Marcelino García and Mateu Alemany were dismissed under Meriton Holdings and Peter Lim after two straight Champions League seasons and a Copa del Rey title.
