Javier Aguirre appointed Valencia head coach on deal to 30 June | OneFootball

Javier Aguirre, 67, has been confirmed as Valencia head coach on a contract to 30 June. AS reports the Mexican takes over 10 days after Carlos Corberán was sacked.

Valencia sit in the relegation places after seven league matches, with 4 points from 21, one win in seven and none at Mestalla after four home games.

Aguirre becomes the oldest coach in the club’s history and his deal includes a unilateral option for one further season if Valencia finish, at minimum, in Europa League positions.

This is his seventh job in Spanish football, having previously managed Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés and Real Mallorca, whom he led to the Copa del Rey final. He has also coached Japan, Egypt and Mexico.

He is the 14th head coach of the Peter Lim era and the first appointment made by new sporting director Braulio Vázquez, back for a second spell at the club.

Valencia have begun this campaign as they did the previous two, battling to avoid the drop for much of the season. Until January, Aguirre must maximise a squad built by Ron Gourlay that has gaps, notably at centre-back amid injuries and form issues.

He has two weeks to work before facing Racing de Santander. Aguirre arrives with assistants Toni Amor and Pol Llorente.
