Jeremy Jacquet has enjoyed a meteoric rise both at Liverpool and with France in the past couple of months.
Jacquet has nailed down a starting berth at Liverpool, forming a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk, helping the Reds keep three clean sheets in five Premier League games.
The 21-year-old has also started France’s last two UEFA Nations League games. Head coach Zinedine Zidane described his display in the draw against Italy as ‘very good’.
Jacquet has revealed what has kept him grounded during his rapid rise to prominence.
“Where does my maturity come from? I don’t know. Maybe from my parents,” he told Téléfoot via footmercato.
“But I’ve always been a fairly calm player with the ball, not to rush too much. And then, I play my football.”
Despite starting the last two games for Les Bleus, the former Rennes centre-back is not desperate to secure a place in Zidane’s side at the moment.
“Honestly, I don’t think too much about establishing myself for now. I only have two caps; I take it match by match. I take the minutes the coach gives me. I try to enjoy it. It’s going very quickly.”
Jacquet could start a third consecutive game for France in Monday’s game against Belgium, with Dayot Upamecano suspended following his red card against Italy.
Maxence Lacroix, Jules Kounde and Lenny Yoro are the other centre-back options for Zidane, but Zidane may be persuaded to keep Jacquet in the starting XI, with France aiming to keep hold of top spot in Group A.
They are one point clear of Belgium, raising the significance of avoiding defeat.
