Zinedine Zidane has lauded Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet after a striking start with France, calling the 21-year-old’s rise remarkable. According to Goal.com, the new national coach has been impressed by his maturity and tactical discipline.
The £60 million summer signing debuted on Monday in a 1-0 win away to Belgium, helping secure a clean sheet. He kept his place for Zidane’s first home game in charge, a 1-1 draw with Italy, after Michael Olise’s superb free-kick was pegged back by a deflected Alessandro Bastoni effort.
Jacquet again stood out at centre-back, commanding the line, winning four duels, making key recoveries and completing 79 of 80 passes. Zidane told reporters: "Very good. Very, very good. Brave. He wasn't afraid to come out a long way. Very good in the duels. He was, once again, very good. I said it four times!"
Jacquet said the step up has been better than he imagined and that training with so many top players is a pleasure. He added that he followed his coach’s instruction to press very high and not look behind him, saying he feels no pressure and is simply playing his football.
At club level, the former Rennes defender has started six of Liverpool’s opening seven matches under Andoni Iraola, forging a steady partnership with Virgil van Dijk. France host Belgium next Monday, when Jacquet will hope to earn a third straight cap. Liverpool then welcome leaders Manchester City to Anfield on October 11, with Jacquet set the task of containing Erling Haaland as Iraola’s side try to become the first to take points off Enzo Maresca’s embattled team this season.
