Charlton Athletic added nine fresh faces to their ranks over the 2026 summer transfer window, but failed in their attempt to make it ten after missing out on a deal to bring back a familiar name to The Valley.

Indeed, Charlton signed nine new players over the recent window, as Nathan Jones looks to continue to maintain his side's place in the Championship and push for a place in the newly-revamped top eight play-off places.

The likes of Danny McNamara, Karlan Grant, and Nathaniel Chalobah have joined on free transfers; Ivan Meslik, Billy Koumetio, and Millenic Alli arrive for nominal fees; and Timothy Noor Ouma, Arthur Okonkwo, and Tyler Bindon have signed on loan for the campaign.

These additions have culminated in an excellent start to the season, winning each of their opening three games, and looking like real contenders for a play-off spot early on.

However, their chances of finding themselves in the top eight come May would be even greater had they not missed out on the signature of former loan star Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.

Rak-Sakyi, 23, came through the youth ranks at Crystal Palace, and spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Charlton in League One, scoring 15 and assisting eight in 43 third-tier games.

Loans to Sheffield United, Rizespor, and Stoke City have since followed to varying degrees of success, as Charlton made a move to bring back their former loan star to the club late on in the summer window.

However, despite agreeing a £5 million deal with Palace, the final details of the arrangement were not ironed out, and as a result, the deal fell through, as the Englishman, with one year left on his deal at Selhurst Park, has since returned to Turkey on loan with Kasimpasa.

Football League World's Charlton fan pundit, Chris Woodward, has shared his thoughts on Rak-Sakyi's move to Charlton breaking down, his subsequent loan switch back to Turkey, and whether this is a good career choice for the winger.

Chris told FLW: "I think Rak-Sakyi has definitely made a mistake going on loan to Turkey, and one that stagnates his career.

"Obviously, it's not entirely Rak-Sakyi's fault that this move has happened, with Palace failing to move him onto an English club since his move to Charlton broke down, and this was his only option for him to avoid not kicking a ball for six months.

"Since his loan at Charlton, he's not kicked on as he should have done due to poor management by Palace, and has really struggled to find somewhere to call home.

"Another loan really does him no good in terms of settling somewhere where he can focus entirely on his football and not have to worry about what the future holds, which he will have to do yet again next summer when he's out of contract.

"The standards of the Championship nowadays, I think staying in England and building himself up would have been the perfect move for him.

"Whilst the Turkish top division is not bad by any means, it's definitely a lot different to how the English game is played. And if he decides to stay in England next year once his contract expires at Palace, this move only hinders his ability to develop."

Jones will be disappointed after missing out on Rak-Sakyi, as though both Tyreece Campbell and Rob Alter are more than capable of playing off the right flank, the latter doesn’t appear to be fancied by the Welshman.

A more natural left-footed winger capable of playing off the right, such as Rak-Sakyi, would have given Charlton yet another option in the final third, and a player who has previously thrived in his one-year stay at The Valley.

Now, Rak-Sakyi will spend at least until January in Turkey, where he will be hoping to earn another contract at Palace. He would need to display some incredible form to do so, as it looks more than likely he will be available on a free transfer next summer.

Charlton may move back in then, but for now, they have missed out on the winger, who will be hoping to impress in his second loan spell in Turkey.
