In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke offered an update on Manchester City and their pursuit of Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton. It has been mentioned that the Mancunian club have dropped their interest in the English midfielder and won’t pursue a move for him this January.

Wharton’s Impressive Form In The Premier League

Wharton enjoyed a great run of form at the London club in the previous campaign when he put in a string of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The 22-year-old scored one goal and grabbed seven assists in 53 matches for Crystal Palace last season in multiple competitions.

The English talent is currently one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League. However, Man City have currently got a lot of reliable options in their midfield department.

His current contract at Selhurst Park will run out in 2029, which would have make him an expensive option for the Mancunian club to consider this January. Thus, it is no surprise that they have decided to cool their interest in Wharton.

Manchester City Cool Their Interest In Wharton: Good Decision For Enzo Maresca?

Wharton is a tough-tackling midfielder who can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and is an accurate distributor of the ball.

The English talent can even contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield. Wharton is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder if told to do so. He has already proven his worth in the Premier League and is well-equpped to make an immediate impact at the Mancunian club.

However, as mentioned earlier, Man City have no immediate need to add to their midfield following the signings of Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi earlier this summer.

At 22, Wharton has the ceiling to be a world-class player in his position someday. Still, it seems like a good decision for Maresca to stop their pursuit of him in the January transfer window as he would struggle to earn regular playing opportunities for them in the coming years.
