Palmeiras are targeting Botafogo midfielder Danilo, an academy graduate, as a priority for the next transfer window.
According to Nosso Palestra, Jhon Textor, sidelined from his role at Botafogo since April, has criticised the player for refusing to play to avoid a 13th Brasileirão appearance, which would block a move to Palmeiras or any other Brazilian club.
Textor said Botafogo paid heavily for Danilo and backed him when others would not, even introducing him to the national coach’s son before his call-up. He argued the midfielder must honour his obligations and could not force an exit to Palmeiras or elsewhere.
He added that if Danilo says he wants Palmeiras, the club should bench him and not play him again until a satisfactory deal is found. Fans may object, he said, but the owner must lead, and he insisted the player should not have asked to sit out. Textor said that if he were in charge, it would not have happened.
Palmeiras are preparing to present a proposal to the player’s representatives covering salary terms and a signing-on fee.
Danilo is with Brazil for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. He scored in a thumping win over Panama at the Maracanã.
