Joan Garcia ruled out for Sevilla match as Barcelona confirm knee injury | OneFootball

Barcelona won 7-2 against Racing de Santander on Wednesday, but it was far from a perfect evening for the Catalan side. The big negative was Joan Garcia being forced off with a knee injury suffered in a rather innocuous incident, for which he will spend a period on the sidelines.

Garcia has been Barcelona’s undisputed starter since he joined from Espanyol last summer, and in that period, he has won them matches on his own with his goalkeeping heroics. It’s why there was a real hope that he would not be out long-term with this knee injury, and while that won’t be the case, he will still miss at least one match.

Barcelona have confirmed that Garcia is “experiencing mild discomfort in his right knee”, and while the club has refused to set a timeframe for his return, Diario AS have reported that he will be out for three weeks.

International break comes at right time for Garcia and Barcelona

That is about as good as it could have been for Barcelona, who will only be without their goalkeeper for this weekend’s trip to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan to face Sevilla. Barring any setbacks, Garcia should return during the international break, with a view to being fit for the home match against Getafe on the 10th of October.

It means that either Wojciech Szczesny or Dominik Livakovic will start against Sevilla on Saturday. Hansi Flick has confirmed the former as his number 2, and while this means that he should get the nod, he’s not in a particularly great moment after gifting a goal to Racing during Wednesday’s victory. Furthermore, he was between the sticks at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan last season as Barcelona tumbled to a 4-1 defeat, which opens the door to a possible debut for summer signing Livakovic, who will be waiting in the wings.
