João Basso out with right calf oedema for Santos at Athletico-PR | OneFootball

João Basso has suffered a right calf oedema and will miss Santos’ trip to Athletico-PR on Thursday 12 at 19:00 at Arena da Baixada in the third round of the Brasileirão.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the centre-back has begun physiotherapy and there is no timetable for his return, and he is likely to be sidelined for upcoming Paulistão fixtures as well.

Santos also have other absentees. Adonis Frías is recovering from a right calf muscle injury, while midfielder Zé Rafael continues physiotherapy for patellar tendinitis. Fellow midfielder Willian Arão is recuperating after surgery to remove a kidney stone.

Basso was on the bench against Noroeste in Bauru on Sunday 8, having come on at half-time in the derby with São Paulo at Vila Belmiro in the league on Wednesday 4. That appearance ended an absence of almost seven months, his first outing since July last year.

A lack of match rhythm was considered a factor in the injury.

He is effectively fifth-choice under coach Vojvoda among the defenders, with Zé Ivaldo, Adonis Frías, Alexis Duarte and Luan Peres ahead of him. This year he has been on the bench in every other game, except the derby with Corinthians in the Paulista. He only featured against São Paulo last week.
