The 24-year-old only arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion last summer in a deal worth £60 million, but after a fine debut season, Chelsea were keen to give him a new deal.

The Brazilian’s new contract now runs until the summer of 2034, ensuring Chelsea keep the forward happy amid summer interest from Barcelona.

He scored 15 league goals and contributed eight assists in 2025-26 and will be hoping to emulate, if not better, that return in the upcoming season.

Joao Pedro has started where he left off in the last campaign during pre-season, scoring seven goals in Chelsea’s six warm-up matches.

He is now under the guidance of new manager Xabi Alonso, who has ensured Joao Pedro leads the Blues’ attack.

After a summer of change, he has also taken the number nine shirt at Chelsea, which Liam Delap wore - vacating his number 20 in the process - and Delap is expected to leave the club this summer.

What has Joao Pedro said after signing his new contract?

Joao Pedro's new deal ahead of their season-opener against Fulham on August 24 offers Chelsea a welcome boost, and they will hope that it gives the forward a spring in his step.

That is certainly the feeling of the Brazilian, who relishing the upcoming season.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea,” he said. “I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to give my long-term commitment to this club. Chelsea has a long tradition of winning and it has big ambitions for the future.

“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club and I have felt at home here in London from the moment that I joined.

“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we can achieve a lot of things, we have a great team, we have a coach who wants to win and has won already. I am fully committed, everyone is ready and hopefully we can achieve our targets.”

Alonso's Chelsea attack is starting to take shape. Danny Welbeck's summer arrival from Brighton sees him as the likely number two choice behind Joao Pedro.

Alonso is set to head into the new campaign with three strikers. Therefore, exits are required, given that Chelsea also have Emmanuel Emegha, Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu on their books.

Emegha is set to stay after signing with RC Strasbourg, which means Delap, Jackson, and Guiu are for sale.

Delap has been attracting Premier League interest. He is valued at £50m, while Guiu is available for loan or to leave the club permanently. Napoli have been linked with the Spaniard. Neither player is in the club's plans under Alonso, and Chelsea will be keen to offload the duo before the summer window closes.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are braced for Aston Villa to advance their interest in Jackson this summer. The Senegal international's asking price is £65m. It comes after Bayern Munich opted not to proceed with keeping Jackson after a loan spell in 2025/26.
