The Terriers striker missed a golden opportunity during their success over Peterborough United
Despite Huddersfield Town emerging victorious once again under Lee Grant against Peterborough United, Terriers striker Joe Taylor may have provided one of the mishaps of the season.
The West Yorkshire side, who have been tipped by many to be among the automatic promotion contenders come the end of the League One season, picked up their fifth win of the third-tier season, defeating Darren Ferguson's struggling side 3-2 at the Accu Stadium.
Many have debated that Grant, who was eventually named as Michael Duff's successor in the off-season, has an 'embarrassment of riches' in his squad, particularly in the attacking department which includes the likes of Taylor, Alfie May, Leo Castledine and Dion Charles - all of whom provide strong League One pedigree and goalscoring nous.
That has been showcased in the early stages of his first full-time managerial role, with Town finding the back of the net 14 times in seven league games - the highest tally across the division thus far - as well as a further three in EFL Cup scalps over Leicester City and newly-promoted Sunderland of the Premier League.
That number could have been added to in the second half against Posh, and whilst Taylor did eventually get himself on the scoresheet, he won't want to see another moment from the five-goal thriller again anytime soon, with plenty of Huddersfield and opposition fans issuing their thoughts on social media.
Taylor joined Huddersfield for £3m from Luton Town in January, initially finding it tough in front of goal in West Yorkshire after previously fruitful loan spells with Colchester United and Lincoln City on loan from the Kenilworth Road side.
After scoring just twice in his first 15 appearances for the Terriers in the second half of last season, during which the club endured a dismal run of form, the 22-year-old has got back to his best in the early weeks of Grant's reign, already scoring three times this season in League One whilst posting a further two strikes in the EFL Trophy success over Newcastle United's Under-21's in midweek.
The third of his League One goals came in stoppage time against the division's bottom side and his former club, coolly slotting through Alex Bass' legs after being sent through on goal by May.
That could have been his second of the day though, with the striker going viral on social media for a miss just minutes beforehand.
After dispossessing the onrushing Bass in a wide position, Taylor raced towards an open net and, instead of opting to shoot straight away, eventually hit the post from just yards out after rounding the Peterborough shot-stopper and Peter Kioso.
Sky Sports were quick to post the miss on their social media channels following the full-time whistle too, with the obvious caption of: HOW DID HE MISS?!"
However, those who were among the 16,383 present at the Accu Stadium, were quick to point out that this was the only foot Taylor put wrong in a tireless performance, with one supporter stating: "He was outstanding today he never stopped running #UTT"
Another Town fan posted a verdict of: "He did absolutely everything right then missed but bar that he was exceptional today"
Unsurprisingly though, others who only saw the miss and nothing else from the game also got involved, with one simple reaction - albeit probably not fully true - claiming: Unbelievable miss! he’ll be thinking about that one all night!"
A Tottenham Hotspur supporter labelled the action as "Miss of the season", although we will have to wait and see on that front.
Meanwhile, a Lincoln City supporter claimed that he would easily bury that chance at Sincil Bank, having scored 10 times in just 19 appearances for the Imps. He said: "Bring him back to Lincoln he’ll score them for fun"
If he hadn't scored later in the game, then maybe the miss would have played on Taylor's mind. However, his third league goal of the campaign will only add to his early-season confidence.
Grant will also be pleased by the desire Taylor showed in the first place to continue pressing from the front with such energy, which will remain a crucial part of his game moving forward.
As mentioned previously, the Town boss has a plethora of strong attacking options that, when fully firing, can cause serious damage in League One as owner, Kevin Nagle, hopes to see the club back in the Championship as soon as possible.
Next up for Huddersfield is a Yorkshire Derby with Bradford City at Valley Parade on Saturday 13th September, with the game kicking off at 12:30PM due to television coverage.
