Joel Piroe has joined West Ham United on a season-long loan, which includes an obligation to buy if they are promoted from the Championship. He may have played his final game for Leeds United.

Piroe initially wanted to stay at Leeds, but he featured for only 15 minutes across the final four friendlies under Daniel Farke. His agent told The Athletic Leeds “need never call me again” if a summer exit was not secured.

The fee is undisclosed, but it is understood that, once loan costs are included, it exceeds the £10 million Leeds paid Swansea City in 2023. Should West Ham go up, as expected, they will owe a double-figure millions fee. If they do not, Leeds can trigger a 12-month extension on a contract that otherwise expires next summer.

Piroe started just two Premier League matches last season, none after August. His only goal came in the FA Cup fifth round, a 3-0 win over Norwich City.

The 27-year-old was central to Leeds’ 2024/25 Championship title and promotion, scoring a league-high 19. He netted four in 41 first-half minutes against Stoke City on promotion day.

He has 34 goals in 118 Leeds appearances, yet played only 572 minutes across all competitions last season, a little over six full games, with five starts.
