It has been reported by Brazilian outlet Globo that the American businessman now requires authorisation in order to agree deals to sell players.

The 60-year-old has proven a controversial figure with Botafogo since arriving as part of their new ownership structure.

The Brazilian club spun off their football division to a for-profit business, which is majority owned by the Eagle Football Group, which Textor oversees.

Textor owns 90 per cent of the SAF, Sociedade Anônima de Futebol, as part of his multi-club operation that also sees him control stakes in French side Lyon and Belgian team RWDM Brussels.

Textor has reportedly suffered a blow in his bid to sign players for Derby, with the club’s social association winning a legal case that gives them authorisation on sales.

While the Brazilian side can still offload players in deals with other teams, it’s understood Textor will not have final say on getting moves over the line.

It was reported earlier this week that the American is seeking the transfer of two Botafogo youngsters to Derby as part of his takeover plans.

The 60-year-old has been linked with a deal with current owner David Clowes that would see him join the Rams in an ownership capacity, with the Championship side currently valued at around £60 million.

The players in question, Jose Kadir Barria and Jordan Barrera have emerged as two exciting talents at Botafogo, so it remains to be seen whether a deal can be agreed as the January transfer window approaches.

It has been claimed that the Série A side sought this challenge against Textor due to a lack of investment from the SAF, with the social association seeking greater control of the club’s finances.

John Textor controversies stacking up is a warning sign for Derby County

Derby have enjoyed some stability under Clowes after a difficult few years prior to his arrival as owner in 2022, with financial issues leading to administration previously.

So supporters will be wary of someone like Textor given the increasing number of controversies surrounding him.

He is proving a chaotic presence wherever he goes, so there is no guarantee he will be a suitable custodian for the Championship side.

Derby are enjoying strong form under John Eustace at the moment, so Clowes should reconsider his stance regarding a takeover for the time being, as that stability he provides is working well for the club.

There is no denying that Derby need stronger external investment in order to fulfil their ambitions of competing at the top-end of the Championship and even returning to the Premier League one day, with Clowes having taken over to simply steady the ship, but there are genuine question marks surrounding Textor and the Rams have been given some food for thought.
