Tomasson replaced Tony Mowbray at Blackburn in the summer of 2022, and he enjoyed an excellent first season in charge at Ewood Park, with his side only missing out on the Championship play-offs on goal difference.

Rovers' strong form continued at the start of the following season, but this time, they were unable to maintain their early momentum, and Tomasson departed by mutual consent in February 2024 after a run of eight games without a win that saw the Lancashire outfit drop down to 18th in the table.

Tomasson's exit came after months of speculation over his future, and the Dane had initially offered to resign in the summer after the club's playing budget was cut, a move he described as a "hand grenade that changed everything".

Speaking in March this year, Tomasson opened up further on his departure from Blackburn, claiming that the fresh financial restrictions left him with little choice but to quit as the project was no longer the one he had signed up for, and he admitted he was "thankful" the club eventually accepted his resignation after blocking his first request to leave.

Tomasson did not have to wait long for his next managerial role after his Rovers departure, with the 46-year-old taking over as head coach of the Sweden national team just over two weeks later, but his time in charge has not quite gone as well as he would have hoped so far.

Tomasson made a strong start to life as Sweden head coach as he led them to promotion to League B of the Nations League after winning five and drawing one of six group games, with his side scoring 19 goals and conceding just four during those fixtures.

However, Tomasson has come under pressure after a poor start to the World Cup qualifying campaign that has included a 2-2 draw against Slovenia, in which Sweden conceded a 90th-minute equaliser, and a shock 2-0 defeat to Kosovo earlier this month.

Those results mean that Sweden are already five points behind Switzerland, who they face in the upcoming international break, with just four games left to play, and defeat to Murat Yakin's men on 10th October would all but end their hopes of automatic qualification for next summer's tournament.

Tomasson received plenty of criticism in the wake of the Slovenia and Kosovo games, but he has now revealed that some of the social media abuse he has been subjected to has crossed a line, and he hinted that the police are now involved in investigating some of the comments that have been made.

"I always tell my wife and children not to read comments, so I haven’t read the comments either," Tomasson told SVT, as quoted by Swedish outlet Sportbladet.

When asked if he had received any online threats, Tomasson said: "I’m not allowed to comment on that. It is an ongoing investigation. If there is hatred, or verbal violence… I think it is just disgusting."

As a worrying trend continues, Tomasson is the latest football figure to receive abuse on social media, and the unacceptable comments he has received should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

Of course, Tomasson should not be forced out of his job because of online abuse, but he may understandably feel that he no longer wants to deal with such comments, and if he does decide to leave his role as Sweden head coach, he would surely have plenty of Championship suitors after his impressive work at Blackburn.
