Jonathan Clauss has been appointed Nice captain for this season, head coach Olivier Pantaloni confirmed on Thursday ahead of the home game against Lorient on Saturday.

Pantaloni said the right-back is well liked in the dressing room and could be a driving force for the squad. He noted there were several options and added that they chose Clauss while hoping the armband works out as well as possible for him.

Clauss, 33, is starting his third season at the club. He takes over from Dante and Morgan Sanson, who carried the role last season.

He said he is very proud of the appointment and had not sought the role. He said he heard praise from his coach and will approach it as a more experienced figure in a young group.

Clauss added that he wants to keep a smile and a positive vibe, aiming to bring everyone with him. His ambition is for Nice to have the best season possible.
