Flamengo’s football director José Boto has revisited the decision to dismiss Filipe Luís, saying he did not expect the internal emotional shock that followed.

“I am the one who identifies the problem and finds the solution. Maybe because I am European I do not feel the emotional side here with Filipe’s farewell as much. Passion for football is good, but I often see it making necessary decisions harder,” he told A Bola.

Flamengo enjoyed a historic 2025, but standards dipped early in 2026. After finishing runners-up in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sul-Americana, the club chose to part with Filipe Luís, informing him after an 8-0 win over Madureira in the Carioca semi-final.

“In Europe we have moved past that phase and are more pragmatic, we take the decisions we think are right. It does not affect me to make a professional decision, I do not mix professional and personal.”

Across 101 matches in charge, Filipe Luís recorded 64 wins, 22 draws and 15 defeats, a 70% return. He lifted seven trophies, the Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Carioca, Brasileirão, Libertadores, Derby das Américas and Challenger Cup.

Flamengo then appointed Leonardo Jardim, who has overseen 23 games so far, with 16 wins, four draws and three defeats.
