Benfica are tracking José María Giménez and intend to pursue the Uruguay international until the final day of the window. The 31-year-old has until next Tuesday to decide whether to start a new chapter or remain at Atlético Madrid.
According to Marca, Benfica hold strong interest in the centre-back and there is talk of reuniting him with Clement Lenglet, who is described as having 12 years with the colchoneros and the profile to maintain a high level.
The Lisbon club plan to stay in the race. The exits of Nicolás Otamendi and António Silva have left a sizeable void in central defence, and Marco Silva’s arrival has raised expectations in their push to regain prominence in Portuguese football.
Benfica are not alone in pursuing him. Giménez retains a strong reputation in Europe and would consider moving only for a winning project capable of challenging for major trophies. Any agreement would require the Portuguese side to cover his salary, while Atlético want any loan to meet their conditions.
Atlético are not ruling out a season without Giménez, but they are not inclined to ease the departure of a key dressing-room figure. Benfica are preparing to push to the limit for an experienced centre-back.
