Former Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill remains without a club this summer, and we look at three Championship clubs who should try to sign him.
The transfer window has shut for all EFL clubs after a busy summer, but you can be sure that some still feel they have left themselves short.
If that’s the case, the only solution is to turn to the free agent market, with many players still on the lookout for a new club.
Perhaps surprisingly, former Burnley man Josh Brownhill falls into that category, with the midfielder having departed Turf Moor after starring in their promotion to the Premier League last season on the back of an excellent goalscoring campaign where only Joel Piroe outscored him.
Despite plenty of speculation, the 29-year-old is yet to decide his next destination, with Wolves boss Vitor Pereira reportedly not keen on the player after he was put to him, whilst it has been claimed he has a big-money offer on the table from a Saudi club. He also turned down Leicester City in the Championship.
Clearly, it would be impossible for any Championship club to compete with that financially, and Premier League interest may emerge once more for Brownhill, who, after his Leicester snub, might feel he is above the level of the second-tier.
But, if it doesn’t, a return to the second tier could be on the cards, and here we look at THREE clubs who should try and bring him in, even if it is a long shot:
After enjoying his best goalscoring season last time out, where he found the net 18 times for Burnley, what better manager for Brownhill to work with than Frank Lampard?
The Chelsea legend made his name as someone who scored crucial goals from midfield, so he will certainly appreciate the qualities of the former Burnley man, and you only have to look at Jack Rudoni to see how the Sky Blues head coach can improve individuals.
Coventry are a fun team to watch right now, and you can imagine the players are loving it. They play an aggressive, attacking style, they try to outscore the opposition, and there is a lot of talent in the ranks.
Brownhill isn’t necessarily needed, but he would add even more to the midfield, and he could play a key role in helping Coventry’s promotion push.
Southampton had a busy end to the window, and they will no doubt be pleased with the business that they managed to get done, as they brought in some exciting young players.
The likes of Finn Azaz and Casper Jander could play big roles this season, but it’s worth remembering that they have lost some important players, including Mateus Fernandes.
So, adding an experienced winner like Brownhill to the team would make sense. Yes, he doesn’t fit the profile of their ideal signing due to his age, but it’s vital that Will Still is given a balanced squad as he targets promotion.
Brownhill could quickly become a leader for Saints, and his tactical flexibility means he could play a few different roles for Still.
There’s no doubt that this is the most unlikely of the trio, but we know that the Wrexham project has appeal.
The Red Dragons’ rise under their Hollywood owners has been spectacular, and their financial commitment has continued this summer as they spent more than £30m on new recruits.
That included bringing Lewis O’Brien and Ben Sheaf to the club, and if they could add Brownhill to that, they would undoubtedly have one of the most impressive midfield combinations in the league.
Again, it’s a real long shot, but Brownhill could quickly become one of the faces of this new-look Wrexham team, and he may fancy the challenge of trying to make even more history with the Welsh side.
