Jürgen Klopp ‘could leave’ Red Bull football role this summer

Fourteen months after becoming Red Bull’s global director of football on 1 January 2025, Jürgen Klopp could depart as early as this summer.

Salzburger Nachrichten reported recent tensions between Red Bull leaders and the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager, suggesting he no longer has unanimous backing. Oliver Mintzlaff has rejected that portrayal, calling it completely absurd and saying the group are satisfied with Klopp’s work.

With the season two thirds complete, results have fallen short of expectations for the two flagship clubs Klopp, aged 58, oversees. RB Leipzig are fifth in the Bundesliga with 10 matches left, 19 points behind Bayern on 63, despite a lighter schedule after missing Europe this season.

Klopp pushed for Ole Werner’s appointment as head coach last summer, a decision that has drawn plenty of criticism. RB Salzburg went out at the Europa League group stage, and a lack of continuity in the dugout is also being held against him.

He has visited Jean Bouin several times in recent months to watch Paris FC in Ligue 1 and has been consulted by the Arnault family, yet he remains little involved in the club’s strategic calls. Red Bull owns 10.6% of Paris FC, and he was not involved in choosing Stéphane Gilli’s successor. Antoine Kombouaré was appointed instead.

Klopp is not thought to be particularly happy in his new role, and talk of a summer exit is growing. He would like to return to coaching, 20 months after leaving Liverpool. Oliver Glasner, now at Crystal Palace, is being linked as a possible successor at the end of the season.
