Julen Lobete apologised after a misjudged balcony remark during Málaga’s celebrations for promotion to Primera División, made while parodying a Lady Gaga lyric.
The player said in a post that euphoria on the city hall balcony led him to say something out of place at such an important moment, and he apologised. He added that those who know him know what he is like, joked he might have been a little toasted, and thanked fans for an unforgettable afternoon.
The attempt to change a verse from a Lady Gaga song fell flat. It did not reach the point of Diego Fuoli, the Sabadell goalkeeper who prompted insults towards the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, during their promotion to Segunda División.
Lobete put the episode down to drunkenness. It was presented as a one-off, not a pattern, and the Lezo forward sought to make that clear.
In a separate Instagram message reflecting on a season of few minutes, he admitted suffering from not playing but said he never stopped insisting, kept training each day, worked quietly and stayed ready for the team.
He concluded that the human group built at Málaga, the unity in the dressing room and the quality of people across the club were decisive in reaching the objective.
