Julián Álvarez missed Atlético de Madrid training again on Thursday with an ongoing illness, and remained at home as speculation over his future intensified, according to El Periódico Mediterráneo.

The absence comes amid a saga over a possible move to Barcelona, with Barça waiting and concern increasing at Atlético. He did not look upbeat against Villarreal and sections of the crowd booed him.

He wants Barcelona, while Atlético do not wish to sell to them and, if forced to cash in, would prefer Arsenal.

Atlético’s director of professional football, Mateu Alemany, attended training, closely monitoring events on his phone.

From Barcelona’s side, Joan Laporta set out details, defending the club’s conduct and expressing surprise that Atlético negotiated with Arsenal after previously indicating there would be no sale without an alternative.

Arsenal could offer €150 million, a figure Atlético would accept only if the bid came from the English club. He does not want to return to the UK after his spell at Manchester City and is happy in Spain.

The window closes on Tuesday one September, and a Barcelona offer of about €100 million remains on the table awaiting a resolution after the player stated during the World Cup that he wanted a move.
