Justin Ellis Scores Fastest Debut Goal in Modern Era of USMNT History | OneFootball

ORLANDO, Fla. – Justin Ellis’ first international goal was so storybook that some members of the U.S. Men’s National Team predicted it.

The first was head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Ellis, a Homegrown player for Orlando City SC, has scored one goal for the team this season. Pochettino told him the second would come Saturday afternoon when the U.S. played Peru on the same grass where Ellis and Orlando City SC play in MLS.

The second to predict the goal was midfielder Gio Reyna, a veteran that 19-year-old Ellis has always looked up to, who told Ellis at training on Friday that he was going to assist him the next day.

“I don’t know how he called it,” Ellis said. “It’s just an unbelievable moment.”

What no one predicted was just how quickly Ellis' first international goal would manifest on the pitch. Four minutes into his USMNT debut, he opened the scoring on the day. His finish was the fastest goal scored by a player making his debut in the modern era of program history.

Ellis finished and started the play that led to his inaugural goal. The forward, one of three debutants in Pochettino’s starting XI, drew a foul on the left side of the pitch. Reyna took the ensuing free kick from about 25 yards from goal, driving a firm kick into the box. Ellis got in front of his mark and flicked a header toward goal, and the ball arched beautifully toward the far post, banking off the post and into the net.

“It was almost perfection,” Ellis said.

With the goal, the Wellington, Fla. native earned Man of the Match honors and became the first to score on his debut in his home state since Brandon Vazquez on Jan. 25, 2023. Those in attendance for U.S. Soccer’s Fan Appreciation match celebrated the Homegrown’s big moment with rousing applause.

Ellis has built his young career in the Sunshine State – scoring nine goals and adding six goals in 40 appearances for Orlando City B. He won MLS NEXT MVP in 2025 with the U-19 squad at Orlando City Academy plus the MLS NEXT Golden Boot on his way to helping the side win the Generation adidas Cup. His strong output led to a contract with the first team in February. He made his first team debut three months later.

On the international level, Ellis has been part of Youth National Teams for the U.S., recording four goals in 11 appearances for the U-19 and U-17 Men’s National Teams. His progression through the pathway led to his first call-up to the senior team, which included an international match in his home state and where he’s scored many goals before.

“When I saw the first game of this camp was going to be here like two months ago, I had my eyes on this camp, really trying to push hard to make this camp,” Ellis said. “I feel I’ve been rewarded for all the hard work I’ve put in up until this moment.”

Ellis' goal on Saturday kicked off a memorable night for the U.S. Although Peru would level the match in the 15th minute, the USMNT only grew stronger as the game went on, adding three goals in the second half to kick off the new era under Pochettino with a resounding 4-1 win.

Ellis was one of 12 players called into USMNT camp for the first time in their careers. Along with forward Julian Hall, who scored a goal in the second half against Peru, the two became the first players since Patrick Agyemang and Matko Miljevic on Jan. 18, 2025, to score in his USMNT debut.

“One of our question marks was this was our first time playing together,” Pochettino said. “After the game, we felt that we looked like we [had been] training for a while. That shows that we have very good, quality players. But they still need our support because they need to evolve and to grow in every aspect... today it showed that with time and being smart in the way that we will manage them that they can be very important for the National Team.”
