Karl Darlow has left Leeds United to join Manchester United, rejecting a new contract and calling the switch a special opportunity after posting a farewell message.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds had offered fresh terms but could not guarantee the 35-year-old a starting place due to plans to recruit a goalkeeper this summer, and he opted to join their rivals.

In an Instagram post set to Olivia Dean’s Ok Love You Bye, the Wales international thanked team-mates, coaches and staff, and said he was proud to help win promotion and then secure Premier League status.

Given the enmity across the Pennines, his well wishes may not land with many Leeds supporters.

He said he was extremely proud to sign for the club, that he is joining an excellent group of goalkeepers, and that he looks forward to helping maintain the standards it demands. He added that he cannot wait to support his team-mates and help drive the group forwards.

Director of football Jason Wilcox said Darlow has proved he can perform at the highest level, praised his work ethic and personality, and called him a strong addition to the goalkeeping group.
